During World War II, the Nazis deported almost the entire Jewish population of Berlin to ghettos, concentration and extermination camps in eastern Europe. A major part of the deportation infrastructure was based in today’s Berlin district of Mitte. This included the two largest so-called collection camps on Levetzowstraße and Große Hamburger Straße as well as the largest of Berlin’s three railway stations used for deportations, the Moabit Freight Station.
