The museum library is a specialist academic library with around 20,000 titles. The focus of the collection is on the history and the present of the Mitte district and its different parts. Together with publications on themes including cultural and social history, National Socialism and the culture of remembrance, local knowledge, architecture and conservation, traffic and nature as well as museum studies, the library collection also contains miscellanies from companies, associations and special anniversaries, from the district and from public authorities, exhibition catalogues, biographical writings and litereature of remembrance. With its high proportion of “grey” literature and special collections, for example the collection with school textbooks and chronics, the reference library is quite unique compared to other specialist libraries in Berlin.A collection of regional weekly newspapers, newspapers covering the entire district and those covering local news in the “Kiez” plus a comprehensive collection of articles in the press covering the history of the district is another part of the library’s holdings. The library also offers documentation relating to specific exhibitions or projects.
The library is a member of the working group of the art and museum libraries (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Kunst- und Museumsbibliotheken – AKMB).
